Frozen Twisted Mint Julep

The first Saturday in May is nearly here, and you know what that means. It’s Derby Day! The Kentucky Derby is a top-rank, Grade 1 stakes race for three-year-old Thoroughbred horses. The race distance is one and one-quarter miles long, and it is run on the racetrack at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. This is the 148th renewal of The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports. Those two minutes are very intense indeed, but everyone knows it’s all about the celebration leading up to the race. People come from all over to enjoy the race and of course, a crisp Mint Julep. For those of you who like to hose a Derby Party, we’ve got a Frozen Twisted Mint Julep Recipe for you to craft for your guests! Now that you know what you’re going to serve, you’ll have more time to pick out an awesome outfit for the big race.

The original Mint Julep recipe consists primarily of bourbon, sugar, water, crushed or shaved ice, and fresh mint, it’s delicious! BUT, we went ahead and made a few tweaks to give this classic a new feel with a similar taste and aura. For the bourbon, we used our Wheat Penny 1958 and its slightly sweeter taste. We substituted the sugar for a homemade simple syrup and stirred for a few minutes before pulling them out. The ingredients to bring it all together is some citrusy Orange Juice! Combine those ingredients into a blender with ice and you’re ready for the best Derby Party yet!
